Code Red Organizing Meeting (RSVP below)

We believe all Canadians deserve a decent shot at affording a suitable home (renting or owning). We're campaigning on the principle of Homes First (the idea that our housing markets should be used first and foremost to provide homes for community members to live in, vs. as investment vehicles or places to park money).

Since the Code Red campaign launched we've achieved some real progress:

  • Both the BC NDP and BC Liberals have announced that housing/affordability will be their #1 issue this election and are attempting to look strong on it; while we have a ways to go as far as meaningful commitments, both parties have adopted a good deal of our messaging;

  • We've met with the Prime Minister, and again with the federal housing Minister and head of CMHC to discuss our analysis and recommendations. The PM concurred with our perspective that B.C. is to housing what Saskatchewan was to medical care a generation ago;

  • Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson has also adopted our Homes First message (previously, he tended to focus on issues of supply without addressing the role of speculative investments/overseas capital);

  • The B.C. government introduced a groundbreaking 15% tax on foreign buyers. It's simultaneously good policy and not nearly enough to ease the squeeze. While many in the real estate industry bemoan the new tax, it has broad public support and the government has rejected the notion of going back on it.

The issue is still in a state of rapid flux, and things could go either way (additional meaningful reform OR largely symbolic measures that don't make much of a difference in our lives).

This is our chance to shape the agenda, and there are some decisions to make at this meeting.

Can you can make it?

(sushi provided; coffee and tea if Eric can manage it; parking becomes cheaper starting @ 6pm in the community centre parkade, hence the 6:15 start time)
