Code Red Organizing Meeting (RSVP below)
We believe all Canadians deserve a decent shot at affording a suitable home (renting or owning). We're campaigning on the principle of Homes First (the idea that the housing market should be designed primarily to provide homes for community members to live in, over housing as investment vehicles or places to park money).
Since the Code Red campaign launched we've achieved some real progress:
- Both the BC NDP and BC Liberals have announced that housing/affordability will be their #1 issue this election, have adopted much of our messaging and are both starting to role out various commitments and proposals;
- We've met with the Prime Minister, and again with the federal housing Minister and head of CMHC to discuss our analysis and recommendations. The PM concurred with our perspective that B.C. is to housing what Saskatchewan was to medical care a generation ago;
- Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson has also adopted our Homes First message (previously, he tended to focus on issues of supply without addressing the role of speculative investments/overseas capital);
- We're pretty much done creating and testing our various online and offline materials, and are ready to really push them out into our communities.
The issue is in a state of rapid flux, and things could go either way (significant, meaningful reform OR largely symbolic measures that don't make much of a difference in our lives).
This is our chance to shape the agenda, all it'll take is people and funds.
Can you can make it to the meeting?
